Another excellent hike in Grand Junction is the short climb to Liberty Cap. From the trail head the hike is 4 miles round trip and rated as moderate. I have done the climb several times and usually have started early in the day to avoid the hot temperatures. You start off with a moderate elevation gain but the trail quickly turns steeper as it winds up the ridge. Near the top there are a few steep sections but trail is still pretty easy to traverse. You eventually climb to a shelf and will see the Liberty Cap rock formation directly in front of you.
Dogs and mountain bikes are not allowed, but Liberty Cap hike is great for kids and adults. I have taken my sons up many times. Just use parental discretion as it is safer for everyone to stay together and follow the trail.
If you decide to hike to Liberty Cap, it’s best to start early, carry water and food, and apply sunscreen. Source for more information at www.gjhikes.com
