Ice Ice Baby!
Back in February after a day of skiing at Powderhorn Lori and I decided to drive over the top of the Grand Mesa just to checkout the snow. Holy Cow! You couldn’t see Lands End road or Island Lake. As someone who is a genuine native, born and raised in Grand Junction, I’ve never seen that much snow on the Mesa. It was a 10-12 foot wall of show all the way to the visitors center. Fathers Day, Lori and I drove over the Mesa on our way back from Ridgeway just out of curiosity. Just how much snow is still up there? After all the stories this past winter of the record amounts of snow I wanted to see first hand what was left. I was blown away by the amount of snow. Cobbett Lake, by the visitors center was still 90% covered in ice. (picture number 1) Island Lake was still Ice bound (picture number 2). Some of the camp grounds are inaccessible. Grand Mesa Lodge which had shared stories of record snow was finally snow free. Mesa Lakes Resort was open and ready for business. On the way home, Plateau Creek was flowing faster and wider than I have ever seen it. If you haven’t been over the Mesa you need to go. If for no other reason just to say you saw it and “remember when”
